World Breastfeeding Week Celebrated at PHC Guduvancheri
As part of the World Breastfeeding Week 2025 observance, the Department of Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics organised a community awareness programme at the Primary Health Centre (PHC) in Guduvancheri on August 5, 2025. The event focused on promoting the importance of breastfeeding and encouraging healthy maternal and child nutrition practices.
The programme featured a range of engaging educational activities aimed at mothers, families, and healthcare workers. A highlight of the event was a traditional Villu Pattu performance by students of the department, which creatively conveyed the message of balanced maternal nutrition and its impact on infant health. The folk art form drew strong attention from the local audience and served as an effective tool for community outreach.
A quiz session conducted by final-year postgraduate students tested participants’ knowledge on breastfeeding and nutrition. Winners were given prizes, further encouraging active participation.
A detailed food display showcased nutrient-rich, lactagogue recipes designed to support lactating mothers. Educational charts explained key concepts, including breastfeeding techniques, benefits of exclusive breastfeeding, and recommended foods for lactating women.
A short video presentation was also screened, aimed at debunking common myths around breastfeeding while highlighting its long-term health benefits. The video emphasised the role of family and community in supporting breastfeeding mothers.
The event concluded with an interactive Q&A session, where mothers and local health workers had the opportunity to clarify doubts and receive counselling from experts.
As a gesture of cultural and nutritional relevance, freshly prepared sundal, a protein-rich snack made with pulses, was distributed to all pregnant and lactating mothers in attendance. The initiative was widely appreciated by the community for being both meaningful and practical.
The event successfully combined traditional communication, modern education tools, and nutritional support to raise awareness about breastfeeding and maternal health.
