SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST) commemorated the 75th anniversary of the Indian Republic by organising a Conclave on Indian Republic @ 75 and inaugurating Vendhar Museum – Phase II, a dedicated space highlighting the Constitution of India. The programme brought together academic leadership, students, and distinguished guests to reflect on constitutional values, democratic institutions, and the responsibility of youth in nation-building.
The event was presided over by Dr. T. R. Paarivendhar, Founder Chancellor, SRMIST, and was graced by Thiru R. N. Ravi, Hon’ble Governor of Tamil Nadu, as the Chief Guest. The proceedings commenced with the National Anthem, Tamil Thai Vazhthu, and the singing of Vande Mataram, marking 150 years of the national song that played a pivotal role in India’s freedom movement.
Addressing the gathering, the Hon’ble Governor highlighted India’s democratic strength, stating that the country stands today as the largest, stable, and robustly functioning democracy in the world. Emphasising the civilisational foundations of democratic values, he noted that democracy has been an intrinsic part of India’s way of life for thousands of years and that over the last 75 years, democratic institutions have continued to grow stronger. He also underscored the role of higher education institutions such as SRMIST in nation-building, observing that they not only impart academic and practical knowledge but also instil cultural and national values.
Calling this period a defining moment for the nation, the Governor described it as a “golden time for Bharat,” urging students to recognise the opportunities before them. Stressing the role of youth in national progress, he reminded students that each individual is a national asset and that the nation grows when its youth achieve their fullest potential. He encouraged students to combine ambition with discipline, dream big, work with perseverance, and contribute meaningfully to the vision of Viksit Bharat.
Presiding over the function, Dr. T. R. Paarivendhar spoke on the critical role of strong academic institutions in sustaining democracy and driving national development. He highlighted the challenges involved in running a university with dignity, safety, and academic responsibility, noting that institutional autonomy, sustained funding, and mutual respect are essential to maintaining academic standards and research excellence. He emphasised that universities play a vital role not only in skill development but also in shaping informed and responsible citizens.
Referring to the inauguration of Vendhar Museum – Phase II, the Founder Chancellor stated that the initiative reflects SRMIST’s commitment to preserving constitutional values and educating future generations through experiential learning. He reiterated that celebrating national milestones within academic spaces strengthens unity, national consciousness, and civic responsibility, reinforcing the role of higher education in shaping both skilled professionals and committed citizens.
