Alumni Talk on Emerging Insulin Sensitizers Held at SRM Medical College
The Department of Pharmacology, SRM Medical College Hospital & Research Centre, SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Kattankulathur, organised an Alumni Talk titled Beyond Biguanides – AMPK to Mitochondria: Imeglimin and the Evolving Landscape of Insulin Sensitizers on 09 January 2026. The programme was conducted in hybrid mode at Demonstration Room 2, Department of Pharmacology, with simultaneous participation through Google Meet.
The session was delivered by Dr. P. Kala, MD, DCP, Professor and Head, Department of Pharmacology, PSP Medical College & Research Institute, Chennai. Undergraduate and postgraduate students, research scholars, faculty members, and invited participants from related disciplines attended the programme, with active engagement from both offline and online participants.
The programme began with a welcome address by the Head of the Department of Pharmacology, who emphasised the role of alumni interactions in strengthening academic learning and professional growth. Dr. P. Kala then delivered an insightful lecture focusing on recent advances in insulin sensitizers, with special emphasis on imeglimin. The talk explored the shift beyond conventional biguanides, highlighting AMPK activation, mitochondrial bioenergetics, and novel mechanisms contributing to improved glycaemic control.
The lecture effectively connected core pharmacological concepts with translational and clinical perspectives, covering aspects of clinical relevance, safety profiles, and future therapeutic potential of newer antidiabetic agents. The session concluded with an interactive discussion, during which participants raised questions on mechanisms of action, clinical applications, and future research directions. Dr. P. Kala addressed these queries with evidence-based explanations.
