Introduction:

After a reasonably active school education period, in rural schools, noteworthy by national scholarships, state rank at school leaving, first Kerala State Sastragathi first prize team member 1974 and first Kerala state science fair Quiz first prize in 1976 and University first rank in university premedical courses, my primary medical education was at the State Government medical colleges of the most literate and population-dense state of India, Kerala, at Calicut and Trivandrum Medical colleges, where I was fifth in a batch of 201 MBBS students and first in the rank of 4 MD students. I then was trained in Neurology and had a post DM training too during the period of 1990-94 at SCTIMST, Trivandrum, Kerala, an Institute of National Importance under Departments of Science & Technology and Biotechnology, Government of India. Thereafter, I started career as Assistant Professor in Neurology at Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences at Tirupati, in Andhrapradesh and then joined JIPMER, another excellent teaching institute, in public sector, which till late, focused primarily in UG training, as associate Professor and Head of Neurology in 2000.

Build up the department to the state of- the-art Neurology training centre, with excellent muti-disciplinary Neurology clinical services including outpatient and special clinic services, Intensive care unit and a rehabilitation ward and stroke unit. I also founded the DM Neurology, BSC and MSc Neurotechnology and PhD and Post Doctoral Clinical Fellowship courses in Stroke and Epilepsy with comprehensive Neuroscience centre facilities including neuromodulation and neurobiology laboratories, ably complimented by the supportive basic medical training and laboratory and service infrastructure. During my services, also did a PhD in Neurogenetics/metabolomics and Pharmacology through a commonwealth scholarship jointly at the centre for Life Newcastle, UK and JIPMER. I trained 8 PhDs including the 3 in Neurosciences, 28 DM Neurologists, and guided 16 DM theses, 2 MCh theses and 14 MD theses; I have 108 indexed papers with 1733 citations; h-index 24 and i10 Index of 45 (GS)/14(WOS/SCOPUS); and have had a total extramural research grant of total > 2.5 crores. Supported the institute and Indian Health Ministry’s various functionaries in multiple capacities in various advisory bodies, while remaining focused in research and department building.

With a primary interest in stroke and degenerative diseases, I built up a comprehensive stroke care centre at JIPMER, with an acute stroke code activation based acute stroke care unit with thrombolysis and mechanical thrombectomy programmes; cerebrovascular doppler; Autonomic function testing; and CT and MRI and SPECT and biplane DSA based Neurovascular labs, Neurorehabilitation facility including robotics, computerized cognitive and neuromodulation applications, over a career span of 25 years of service at JIPMER, making it easily the department with the best comprehensive lab infrastructure in India. This was made possible due to the multiple short trainings I got in various international laboratories with experts around the world during the early years after Neurology qualification through several travel grants.

I have also been active in the national front in the stroke specialty and has become the chairman of the stroke subsection of Indian academy of Neurology last two years, having served as its convenor for previous 6 years. I have been an active contributor of the India specific National Stroke guidelines 2019, developed by the DGHS of the ministry of Health and Family Welfare, whose second version is now being developed. Worked with autistic children at special schools in Pondicherry and won the Neurorehabilitation initiative of the year 2024 award of the Indian academy of Neurology this year. I was the Tamil Nādu Academy of Neurology Executive member, Vice-president and then the President too. I am currently also the convener for the Tropical Neurology subsection of India.

I have a special passion for development of health care products in India either novel in concept or design or lower in cost compared to international products and to make it in India for the world, which aligns well the current Government’s national goals. I myself is the discoverer of two Indian patents of important neurological applications in comatose patients and in those with nerve repair and was also the supervisor for the first successful medical student patentee of the institute and 4 of my Neurology trainees have won AAN international scholarships/ Erasmus Mundus European mobility travel grants. I have also received provisional patent registration for a low-cost technology producing stem-cell derived exosomes in India. I also was the PI for a national multicentric trial of thrombectomy in stroke using a low-cost cerebrovascular stent developed by Indian scientists in the US whose results were presented at WSC at Barcelona and has received licensing from DCGI for marketing in India. This stent made of an alloy; Nitinol is going to be made in India in Hyderabad by Ms. Gurutva enterprises from February 2026 onwards. We also researched on several protocols for the non-invasive brain stimulation techniques in stroke rehabilitation and showed the superiority of a TMS based protocol over tDCS, combined and placebo stimulations, a paper well-received at American Academy of Neurology national conference 2025, San Diego and at the Brain stimulation
