Alumni Talk on Autism Spectrum Disorder

The Department of Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology at SRM Medical College Hospital and Research Centre, SRMIST-KTR, conducted an alumni talk titled “Alumni Spotlight: Reconnect and Inspire” on January 6, 2025, at SRM Hospital. Faculty members, research scholars, and undergraduate and postgraduate students from the department attended.

The event featured distinguished alumnus Mr. Jawahar K, Director of SB Therapy Solutions Pvt. Ltd., who shared his extensive knowledge and experience in the field of Speech-Language Pathology. With over 11 years of expertise, particularly in Neurology and Child Language Disorders, Mr. Jawahar delivered an enlightening talk on “An Insight into Autism Spectrum Disorder in the Early Years of Development.”

During his presentation, Mr. Jawahar covered a wide range of critical topics, including:

● An overview of the neurotypical brain
● The importance of movement during infancy
● Bottom-up and top-down developmental approaches
● Primitive reflexive behaviours in typically developing children and their alterations in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder
● Sensory imbalances across various domains such as tactile, vestibular, proprioceptive, auditory, visual, gustatory, and olfactory senses
● Sensory modulations, including hypersensitivity and hyposensitivity
● Strategies for sensory regulation
● Communication difficulties resulting from sensory imbalances
● Methods to improve communication skills through sensory regulation
● The importance of interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary approaches
● Neurodiversity-affirming practices

The talk gave the attendees valuable insights and practical strategies, significantly enhancing their understanding of Autism Spectrum Disorder.
