International Yoga Day Celebrated at SRM Medical College Hospital & Research Centre

SRM Medical College Hospital & Research Centre, Kattankulathur, celebrated the 11th International Day of Yoga with great enthusiasm on 21st June 2025. The event, themed “Yoga for One Earth, One Health,” was conducted in line with the directives of the Ministry of AYUSH and the National Medical Commission (NMC) to promote yoga as a holistic and preventive health practice. The program, held at New Lecture Hall 4, brought together faculty, students, and healthcare professionals.

The celebration aimed to increase awareness of the health benefits of yoga among MBBS students and faculty, highlight yoga’s relevance in both personal and professional healthcare, and encourage active participation through demonstrations and competitions.

The event commenced with an invocation, followed by a warm welcome address by ~ Dr. A. Saravanan, Professor and Head of the Department of Physiology.
~ The Inaugural Address was delivered by Dr. Nitin M. Nagarkar, Pro Vice-Chancellor (I/C) and Dean (Medical), who emphasized the role of yoga in modern medical practice and lifestyle enhancement.
~ Dr. V. Sathyanarayanan, Professor and Associate Dean (Student Affairs), presented the Special Address, where he spoke on the significance of this year’s theme, “Yoga for One Earth, One Health,” and the importance of integrating yoga into daily life.

A practical demonstration of Common Yogic Practices followed, led by:
● Dr. S. Vidhya Shankari
● Dr. Dhanalakshmi K
● Dr. P. Manoraj

This interactive session offered participants the opportunity to engage in foundational yoga postures and breathing techniques, promoting physical, mental, and emotional well-being.

In the lead-up to the event, several student-centered competitions were held to foster creative expression around the theme of yoga. These included:
● Slogan Writing Competition in English and Tamil, encouraging concise, impactful messages. Deyasini Saha, a first-year MBBS student, secured the first prize in this category.
● E-Poster Design Competition, focusing on the role of yoga in health and sustainability. Bhagya Mulkikar (I MBBS) won the first prize, followed by Abhinav Agarwal (II MBBS) as the runner-up.
● Short Film Contest, where students created 2–3-minute films on “Yoga for Health & Harmony.” Deyasini Saha (I MBBS) also won the first prize in this category, showcasing her talent in both visual and written expression.

The prize distribution ceremony was held at 10:15 AM, celebrating the creativity and enthusiasm of the students.
The celebration saw active participation from students and faculty across departments, with yoga demonstrations allowing all attendees to connect with the physical and mental benefits of the ancient practice.

The 2025 celebration of the International Day of Yoga at SRM Medical College Hospital & Research Centre successfully reinforced the institution’s commitment to promoting holistic health among future medical professionals. By embracing the global theme of “One Earth, One Health,” the event echoed the vital need for harmony between personal wellness and planetary health.
