On 27th June, 2023, Division of Medical Research, Faculty of Medical & Health Sciences, SRMIST, Kattankulathur jointly organized a One Day Workshop cum Faculty Development Programme (FDP) on the “Overview of Systematic Review and Meta-analysis” in collaboration with ICMR-NIE, Chennai. The workshop was inaugurated by Dr. S. Ponnusamy, Registrar, SRM IST, and chaired by Dr. Bhavani Shankara B, Scientist-E & coordinator HTAIn (Health Technology Assessment in India) and his team from ICMR-NIE Chennai. In his inaugural talk, Dr. S. Ponnusamy emphasised on improving the scientific output and quality of research at all levels, starting from undergraduates, postgraduates, PhD scholars to faculty level and deliberated the importance of systematic review and meta-analysis. He also highlighted on the much needed scientific impetus to identify and address the knowledge gap in the current Indian healthcare scenario.

The aim of the workshop cum FDP was to promote quality research among medical undergraduates, postgraduates, PhD scholars and faculties of multiple clinical disciplines. One critical aspect of this is interdisciplinary research which converges different fields and helps the researchers to develop a wider understanding of their topic. By incorporating different viewpoints from various academic and scientific branches, a researcher can create new perspectives. As systematic reviews provide a transparent way of gathering and synthesizing the results of scientific studies in a comprehensive manner, it becomes essential to learn how to conduct systematic reviews in order to improve the quality of our research and publications. The speakers gave insightful information pertaining to systematic review and meta-analysis and how to initiate the process in a specified manner to achieve high scientific values. Undergraduates, postgraduates, research scholars as well as clinicians of various departments in the SRM MCH &RC have actively participated in the workshop and gained lot of information from the speakers.
