SRM Medical College Hospital and Research Centre Celebrates World Food Safety Day 2024

The Department of Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics, SRM Medical College Hospital and Research Centre (SRMMCH&RC) celebrated World Food Safety Day on June 7, 2024, with the theme “Food Safety: Prepare for the Unexpected.”

The event commenced with a warm welcome address by Ms. Lakshmi E, Associate Professor, who emphasized the importance of food safety in today’s rapidly changing world and the necessity of being prepared for unexpected challenges in the food supply chain.

Presidential Address:
The presidential address was delivered by Dr. Nitin M. Nagarkar, who underscored the critical role of food safety in public health and the responsibilities of professionals in ensuring safe and nutritious food for all. He also applauded the efforts of the Department of Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics in organizing such an important event and fostering awareness about food safety.

Keynote Speech:
Dr. Silambu Selvi, Associate Professor, introduced the chief guest, Dr. Anuradha, highlighting her extensive experience and significant contributions to the field of food safety. Dr. Anuradha delivered an engaging talk centered around the theme “Food Safety: Prepare for the Unexpected.” She discussed various potential risks and hazards in food safety, including emerging pathogens, the impacts of climate change, and food fraud. She stressed the importance of a robust food safety management system and the need for continuous monitoring and innovation to tackle unforeseen challenges.

Interactive Demonstrations and Sessions:
The event featured a hands-on demonstration on detecting food adulteration, providing participants with practical knowledge about simple and effective methods to identify common food adulterants. This session was interactive and made learning practical and engaging for students.

The celebration concluded with an interactive session where participants had the opportunity to engage with Dr. Anuradha, asking questions and discussing various aspects of food safety. The discussions highlighted the collective responsibility of individuals and organizations to ensure food safety.

The celebration of World Food Safety Day 2024 at SRMMCH&RC was a resounding success, reinforcing the importance of being prepared for the unexpected in the realm of food safety.
