SRMMCHRC Conducts Nutrition Awareness Programme for Bus Crew at Kilambakkam Terminus
The Department of Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics, in collaboration with the National Service Scheme (NSS) and the Department of Pharmacology, SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST), organised a Nutrition Awareness Programme at the CMDA–KCBT Kilambakkam Bus Terminus on 10 September 2025 as part of National Nutrition Month celebrations.
The programme was tailored to address the unique health needs of bus crew members, who often face irregular work schedules, long hours of sitting, and limited access to balanced meals. To support their well-being, the team offered:
- Nutritional status assessments including body composition, hand grip strength, and blood pressure monitoring
- Personalised dietary counselling with advice on managing irregular eating patterns, fatigue, and sedentary routines
- Demonstrations of healthy cooking models and distribution of diet handouts promoting affordable, practical food choices
- Educational materials such as charts and banners highlighting key nutrition guidelines for daily life
The initiative received an enthusiastic response from the crew. Many participants expressed appreciation for the on-site counselling and simple, adaptable tips that could fit into their demanding schedules.
Speaking about the event, the organisers emphasised that preventive health and nutrition education can significantly reduce the risk of chronic lifestyle-related conditions. By bringing these services directly to the workplace, the programme aimed to make health care more accessible and relevant to everyday challenges.
This outreach not only raised awareness but also highlighted the importance of nutrition as a cornerstone for physical and mental well-being in professions where health is often compromised by routine.
