Insightful Guest Lecture by the Department of Psychiatry
The Department of Psychiatry, SRM Medical College Hospital and Research Centre recently organized a guest lecture by Dr. Tharangini Murugaiyan, a distinguished consultant psychiatrist from the National Health Service (NHS) in the United Kingdom (UK).
This guest lecture was aimed at broadening our students understanding of global standards and practices in psychiatry, offering them invaluable insights into how mental health care is approached and managed internationally. Held on August 21, 2024, in the hospital seminar hall, SRM Medical College.
The event was attended by members from various departments across the medical fraternity, reflecting the interdisciplinary interest and significance of the topic discussed. The proceedings began with the “Tamil Thai Vazhthu,” followed by a warm welcome address delivered by Prof. Dr. Arul Saravanan, Head of Department, Psychiatry, who emphasized the importance of such international collaborations and the value they bring to our academic community.
The occasion was graced by the presence of Lt. Col. Dr. Ravi Kumar, Pro Vice Chancellor, SRMMCHRC, who delivered a special address, highlighting the institution’s commitment to providing its students with a global perspective in medical education.
The inauguration of the event was carried out by Dr. Nitin M Nagarkar, Dean (Medical), SRMMCHRC, and Dr. Venkatraman, Medical Superintendent, SRMMCHRC. Their speeches underscored the critical role of psychiatry in modern medicine and the importance of learning from global leaders in the field.
Dr. Tharangini Murugaiyan then took the floor to deliver her talk titled “Beyond Diagnosis – Managing Complex Presentations and Clinician’s Frustration.” Her lecture delved into the challenges that psychiatrists face when dealing with complex cases that do not fit entirely into diagnostic categories. She discussed strategies for managing these complexities, emphasizing the importance of a holistic and patient-centered approach. Her insights were particularly valuable in highlighting the need for adaptability and resilience in psychiatric practice, as well as the importance of collaboration among healthcare professionals.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks from Prof. Dr. Madhusudan, who expressed gratitude to Dr. Tharangini for sharing her expertise and to all those who contributed to the successful organization of the event. The formal proceedings were then brought to a close with the National Anthem, marking the end of a highly enlightening and inspiring session for all attendees.
