Bridging Theory and Practice: Hands-On Training in Fetal Growth & Doppler Ultrasound

A comprehensive one-day hands-on workshop on “Fetal Growth and Doppler Assessment” was successfully conducted on 19th July 2025 at the OG Seminar Hall, SRM Medical College Hospital & Research Centre. Jointly organised by the Departments of Obstetrics & Gynaecology and Radio Diagnosis, in association with The Fetal Clinic, the workshop was designed to equip obstetricians, sonographers, and postgraduate trainees with essential practical skills in fetal growth evaluation and Doppler ultrasound techniques.

The event commenced with a formal inaugural function graced by eminent dignitaries, including Dr. Manikandan K, Consultant at The Fetal Clinic, alongside senior faculty members. Dr. M. Anuradha, Professor & Head of the Department of OBG, delivered the welcome address, emphasising the critical importance of accurate fetal growth assessments in reducing perinatal morbidity and mortality. This was followed by the inaugural speech of Dr. Nitin M Nagarkar, Pro-Vice Chancellor (I/C) and Dean, who underlined the need for continuous skill development in the ever-evolving field of maternal-fetal medicine. The ceremony concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Senthil Kumar, Professor & HOD of Radiodiagnosis, who expressed his appreciation to the chief guest, faculty, organising team, and all participants.

The workshop aimed to provide practical training in fetal biometry, enhance understanding of growth chart interpretation, and improve clinical decision-making based on Doppler indices. The academic sessions combined didactic lectures, live demonstrations, and interactive hands-on training. Key topics covered included “Placenta: Key Concepts in Fetal Growth,” “Downstream Resistance: Central Concept,” “Optimising Doppler Study,” “Fetal Biometry: Challenges and Solutions,” and focused technical overviews of the uterine artery, umbilical artery, middle cerebral artery, and ductus venosus. Diagnostic fundamentals related to fetal growth and fetal growth restriction (FGR) were also thoroughly addressed. Seventy participants were divided into small groups across ten ultrasound stations to facilitate individualised, expert-guided practice in fetal biometric measurements such as BPD, HC, AC, and FL, as well as Doppler waveform acquisition and interpretation.

Renowned faculty members, including Dr. Manikandan K, Dr. Aarthi M Rangaraj, Dr. Ponmozhi Ganesan, Dr. Shweta Singh, Dr. Elamathi Devi, Dr. Rithanya Murali, and Dr. Vidhya, conducted the sessions, sharing their vast clinical experience and knowledge. Participant feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with attendees commending the balance between theory and hands-on application, and appreciating the opportunity for real-time practice.

The workshop proved to be a valuable academic event, reinforcing the importance of accurate fetal monitoring and contributing meaningfully to the advancement of perinatal care. SRM MCH & RC remains committed to fostering clinical excellence and continuous learning through such impactful educational initiatives.
