About Us
- The Department of Transfusion Medicine (DTM) in SRM Medical College Hospital & Research Centre was started initially as SRM Blood Bank in the year 2004.
- It was established to cater to the needs of SRM Hospital. Initially, our blood collection rate was around 2000 units per annum.
- We evolved into a full-fledged operational blood bank with an equipped blood component separation facility in the year 2006 with dedicated medical officers, technical personnel, and staff nurses.
- We have started doing Apheresis procedures using automated cell separator machines from the year 2019.
- As per the Drug & Cosmetic Act and NBTC guidelines, the blood bank has been renamed to the Department of Transfusion Medicine & Blood Centre.
- The Department of Transfusion Medicine and blood centre is a state-of-the-art licensed blood centre with a 24-hour facility, which offers the entire spectrum of services from donor screening.
- Blood collection to component separation of blood components including packed Red Blood Cells, Fresh Frozen Plasma, Platelet concentrates, and Cryoprecipitate.
- Platelet pheresis is regularly done to provide single donor platelets (SDP) for needy patients. The blood centre also has the facility to do the leucodepletion of red cells.
- We provide safe blood components to the patients by screening the blood units for transfusion transmissible infectious diseases using the fully automated Chemiluminescence Immuno Assay (CLIA) method.
- The immunohaematological techniques are performed using both semi-automated column agglutination technology and a high throughput fully automated platform.
- We conduct Voluntary Blood donation camps and awareness drives in our SRM Institute of Science and Technology campus and also outside our institute.
Our Vision
- To become the model blood centre in the state & strive to provide excellent services to the patients and community
- To become one of the best Immuno-haematology units with well-equipped laboratory facilities
Our Mission
- Increase the number of voluntary blood donors by conducting regular camps and creating awareness among them thereby achieving our goal of 100% voluntary blood donation
- To strictly bind to good manufacturing practices as per NABH guideline
- Extramural research projects in the field of Immuno hematology and blood transfusion
- Conducting national/regional conferences and CME programme to improve the academic skills of the staff and students in the field of Transfusion Medicine
- The blood centre continually strives to maintain high-quality standards in the provision of safe blood to meet the needs of the patient
Academics
- Medical: Undergraduate (MBBS Students) interns & Post Graduate (MD students) posting in blood centre.
- Allied health Sciences: Immunohematology and blood transfusion is a subject course (theory and practical) for the B.Sc. Medical Laboratory Technology (B.Sc. MLT) students for the V semester.
- B.Sc. Nursing and other Allied health Sciences courses are posted regularly in the blood centre.
