Department of Transfusion Medicine and Blood Centre

About Us

  • The Department of Transfusion Medicine (DTM) in SRM Medical College Hospital & Research Centre was started initially as SRM Blood Bank in the year 2004.
  • It was established to cater to the needs of SRM Hospital. Initially, our blood collection rate was around 2000 units per annum.
  • We evolved into a full-fledged operational blood bank with an equipped blood component separation facility in the year 2006 with dedicated medical officers, technical personnel, and staff nurses.
  • We have started doing Apheresis procedures using automated cell separator machines from the year 2019.
  • As per the Drug & Cosmetic Act and NBTC guidelines, the blood bank has been renamed to the Department of Transfusion Medicine & Blood Centre.
  • The Department of Transfusion Medicine and blood centre is a state-of-the-art licensed blood centre with a 24-hour facility, which offers the entire spectrum of services from donor screening.
  • Blood collection to component separation of blood components including packed Red Blood Cells, Fresh Frozen Plasma, Platelet concentrates, and Cryoprecipitate.
  • Platelet pheresis is regularly done to provide single donor platelets (SDP) for needy patients. The blood centre also has the facility to do the leucodepletion of red cells.
  • We provide safe blood components to the patients by screening the blood units for transfusion transmissible infectious diseases using the fully automated Chemiluminescence Immuno Assay (CLIA) method.
  • The immunohaematological techniques are performed using both semi-automated column agglutination technology and a high throughput fully automated platform.
  • We conduct Voluntary Blood donation camps and awareness drives in our SRM Institute of Science and Technology campus and also outside our institute.
