Faculty Initiative Towards Societal Care; Eye Donation Awareness Program

Continuing with the approach to support society in potential ways, Mr. A Velu, Manager of the Eye Bank at the Department of Ophthalmology, SRM Medical College Hospital and Research Centre (SRMMCHRC), went a step ahead in promoting the cause of eye donation. The last activity listed by Mr. Velu was on the 28th of July 2024 when he was engaged in the Eye Donation Awareness Programme, Tamil Nadu Retired Officers Association. The event was organized in the Government Higher Secondary School located in Singaperumal Koil, Chengalpattu.

The program was designed to increase the awareness of the general population on the need for eye donors as well as on the miraculous effect of organ transplantation in the lives of people with vision impairment. Mr. Velu gave an engrossing and enlightening speech, outlining the subject of eye donation and the procedure. He also underlined how an act of eye donation means that someone can regain sight and how one’s life can be transformed for the better in case of blindness or other forms of eye pathologies.

At the occasion, thirty pledge forms for eye donation were circulated among the people and everyone was urged to pledge for eye donation. The reception was very enthusiastic, ten pledge forms were filled and handed into the organization on the spot. On their behalf, the organizations were producing wallet cards and also eye donor cards for new pledgers on the same day, as a sign of their devotion to the course.

This is the face of SRMMCHRC’s unrelenting spirit in the aspect of outreach programs and health promotion. Awareness on important health matters is created and people are encouraged to be more active in programs that are essential to society. With such initiatives, SRMMCHRC contributes towards the enhancement of medical proficiency in the country and develops societal conscience amongst the faculty and students.

This program proves that healthcare issues and concerns must involve cooperation and awareness-raising on a more significant level. Hence, SRMMCHRC continues to strive and pursue the goal of improving the health of communities and its members through the implementation of various efforts.
